Adaptive Bilateral Filter for JPEG 2000 Deringing

Ringing artifacts arise near edges in highly compressed JPEG2000 images. This paper is devoted to the study of the optimal bilateral filter parameter selection in image deringing. We propose modification of the bilateral filter: adaptive bilateral filter, where parameters of bilateral filter are changing according to the corresponding pixel. On the first stage calculation of the filter parameters are made for the each pixel of the image. Parameters are calculated based on the information of the nearby pixels in a local area defined by a mask. On the second stage these parameters are used to adjust the adaptive bilateral filter. Experimental results show that the proposed adaptive bilateral filter allows to remove ringing artifacts while introducing less blurring and thus increasing visual quality of compressed JPEG2000 images.
